National Park Adventure Week

In the giant’s garden – 7 days in the Hohe Tauern National Park in East Tyrol

In harmony with unspoilt nature: The Hohe Tauern National Park region in East Tyrol, situated to the south of the main ridge of the Alps, is one of the most pristine landscapes in Austria. Crystal clear water, green alpine pastures and fresh mountain air – here, all’s right with the world. It must have been the variety, the beauty and the exceptionality of the area that finally created a branched network of hiking paths with lots of refuge huts, mountain inns and snack stations. More than 1,300 kilometres of hiking paths at all altitudes in and surrounding the region of Großglockner, Großvenediger and a further sixty 3,000 metre peaks are available. The special atmosphere of the Hohe Tauern National Park can already be felt and experienced at the National Park partner establishments with their family ambience.

Info & Buchung beim Anbieter

Day 1: Arriving and feeling instantly at home – these are holidays at a National Park partner establishment. You will be warmly welcomed and told interesting stories right upon your arrival and you will receive information about the hiking options as well as outings with the rangers to the mountains in the Hohe Tauern National Park.

Day 2: As a start we choose the easy tour to the back Virgental valley, to the impressive Umball waterfalls where, over thousands of years, the power of the water has formed impressive landscapes. We can enjoy the peace and quiet and recharge our batteries with a substantial lunch in the form of a typical East Tyrolean cold platter at the Islitzeralm mountain hut.

Day 3: Equipped with spotting scopes and binoculars, we’ll start off to Kals for wildlife watching. Together with our ranger, Andreas, we’ll watch the native wildlife, such as ibex, eagle or stag, in their natural habitat and learn lots of interesting facts about the fauna. In the evening we’ll visit the national park house in Matrei, where audio guides provide the necessary information to guide us through the great nature exhibition.

Day 4: We will make use of the offers of the East Tyrol Card and take a trip with the Goldried cable cars up to the “Europa Panoramaweg” – this European panorama trail will also take us to the new “Adlerlounge”, a mountain hut of a new dimension, and we’ll treat ourselves to some culinary pampering there.

Day 5: By car towards St. Jakob where we are already awaited by new electric bikes. Relaxed and environmentally friendly we’ll ride on the motorised bicycles through the varied environment of East Tyrol to our destination, the Jagdhausalmen, the oldest alpine pastures in East Tyrol.

Day 6: Accompanied by ranger Andreas and equipped with Swarovski binoculars, we’ll have a good look at the large and small birds in the National Park region. We’ll start off together at the Tauernhaus building in Matrei in the direction of the old mountain station and we’ll meet bearded vulture, golden eagle, Eurasian pygmy owl and others. Afterwards we can relax at the Erlebnisbad Virgen swimming pool centre and enjoy the sunshine.

Day 7: One week goes by so quickly – packed with natural experiences and lots of information you’re off home again. But it’s only until next year.
