Fixed rope route week in the Lienzer Dolomites

Adventures on the rocks – climbing in East Tyrol

The shining blue sky above, the warm rocks of the Dolomites under your feet and views ranging as far as the Hohe Tauern mountain range: after some hundred metres of ascent on the fixed rope route you can enjoy a well deserved rest in this setting on one of the summits of the Lienzer Dolomites. The fixed rope routes in East Tyrol have been enjoying a Renaissance for years – not without good reason. As well as the longest fixed rope route in the Alps – the panorama fixed rope route along the jagged peaks of the Dolomites including a Tibetan bridge, also some legendary and renovated as well as new fixed rope routes and plaisir routes can be found here. A special highlight for adrenalin junkies and mountain enthusiasts is the fixed rope route in the Galitzenklamm gorge directly next to the cycle path along the river Drau. Roaring water, glistening drops, rope bridges and the admiring looks of the spectators along the footpath in the gorge make this route a very special experience that you will not forget so soon. Climbing beginners can have their first tries with expert instruction at the ‘tree park’ at the crystal clear lake Tristacher See. The highlight of this high rope park featuring many bridges, footbridges and ropes between fragrant spruce trees is the “human catapult”: climbers can fly several metres through the air (perfectly secured, of course) with it and then swing down towards the valley around Lienz. The fresh water of lake Tristacher See will cool you down afterwards! Perfectly trained mountain guides accompany climbers safely to the summits – definitely a special experience.

Day 1: Arrive and be amazed – nowhere else will you find such a multi-faceted combination of town, nature and mountains as in Lienz. To the south of Lienz are the Lienzer Dolomites, to the north the peaks of the Hohe Tauern mountain range. We’ll meet Martin, our climbing guide, and discuss the coming exciting days with him.

Day 2: To get into the proper mood, we will take our first steps under expert instruction in the “tree park” at the crystal-clear lake Tristacher See.

Day 3: And off we go to the rocks. By bike we’ll ride to the Galitzenklamm gorge. The newly laid out fixed rope route leads along roaring waterfalls through the gorge at the foot of the Rauchkofel. Impressive views down and the roaring of the water make this tour a “cool” experience. Since this introductory tour is so great, we’ll walk across the footbridges and on the hiking path through the gorge, back to the starting point. Then we can use the bicycles to take a short trip to Aguntum, Tyrol’s only Roman town.

Day 4: We’ll let the hikers’ taxi bring us to the Dolomitenhütte hut, from where it will take us a bit more than an hour to get to the Karlsbader Hütte hut – the meeting point for all climbing fans. Together with Martin we will walk towards the Gamswiesenspitze. This is the start of the Madonna fixed rope route, one of the hot spots in this climbing area. Highlights there are the "rock madonna" and a 16 m long suspension bridge. In Martin’s safe hands, however, all this is no problem. Having arrived at the top, we’ll be rewarded with wonderful all-round panoramic views of the East Tyrolean mountains.

Day 5: We will take the opportunity to spend a "day of leisure" – relaxing, a nourishing breakfast, then we’re off on a shopping tour in the town of Lienz – here an ice cream, there a cappuccino, fresh East Tyrolean bread with dry-cured ham – we’ll burn the calories again tomorrow. In the afternoon we can enjoy the sunshine at the Dolomitenfreibad open-air swimming pool centre.

Day 6: We’ll continue our tour up to the Karlsbaderhütte hut in the early morning. Today Lisi will accompany us – you will be impressed by her professional manner right from the start and feel totally safe with her. On our last day we want to pass the impressive Laserz rock face on a demanding 620 m long climbing trail. Because of the steepness it is a real challenge, which we’ll overcome very well with Lisi’s help. Back at the Karlsbaderhütte hut, we’ll continue to be impressed by the rock beauties of the Lienzer Dolomites.

Day 7: Going home. We’ll turn around once again and promise to come back to East Tyrol with its tempting countryside as soon as possible – because there’s so much left to discover.
