Hiking week in East Tyrol

Hiking week in East Tyrol

Discover the variety of nature in East Tyrol

The call of the mountains cannot be resisted, it's so easy to reach the Hohe Tauern National Park and the Dolomites – it only takes you a few minutes to get to the foot of the mountains. Hiking, climbing, discovering. Choose between flowering alpine meadows or jagged cliffs, between moss-covered paths or stony trails. The superior feeling at the top of one of the numerous 3,000 plus peaks, on safe rope routes in jagged rock faces, tranquil green meadows, sociable beer drinking at one of the huts: something to please everyone. Back in the valley, enjoy the Italian flair in Lienz, sip a cappuccino under a palm tree and relax!

Duration: 7 Days

Valid from 04.Juni.2012 bis 24.September.2012

Day 1: Arrival in the district town of Lienz. Already the southern flair of the town shows that relaxation, sunshine and sport are all very close together here. We’ll pick up our hiking poles and hiking rucksack as well as the East Tyrol Card from the tourist information centre and let the trained staff explain the best hiking tours to us.

Day 2: We’ll start off leisurely on the first day. As an ascending aid, we’ll make use of the cable cars to get onto the Zettersfeld. Having arrived up there, we can enjoy the clear views of the wonderful Lienzer Dolomites and the wide Lienz valley floor. Then we’ll walk leisurely towards Neualpseen – crystal-clear mountain lakes. There we can enjoy the peace and quiet as well as our traditional East Tyrolean snack. Back again in the valley, we can make use of the many services included with the East Tyrol Card and visit Bruck Castle, the former residence of the Counts of Görz.

Day 3: The Hohe Tauern National Park is on our agenda today. Together with our ranger, Andreas, we’ll walk to the wild and romantic Debanttal valley and listen to expert explanations about alpine farming, fauna and flora. The entire tour takes 5 hours, although there’s only 2 hours of walking – because our ranger provides such interesting information. Afterwards we have the option to relax and unwind in the bright sunshine at the Dolomiten-Freibad open-air swimming pool centre.

Day 4: Dolomites’ Day – up to the gleaming white limestone mountains. We’ll set off very early in the morning towards the Karlsbaderhütte hut. The ascent takes over 2 hours – but it is definitely worth the effort. The mountain lake next to the hut invites hikers to take a refreshing swim – if it weren’t so cold. Rupert the hut keeper will teach us about the surrounding mountains and also provide tips on the numerous fixed rope routes around the Karlsbaderhütte hut. Climbing? Never tried it? Well then, that would be an option for the next day. On the descent we finally get the opportunity for a refreshing swim – make way for a jump into lake Tristachersee.

Day 5: No sooner said than done. With our hire bicycles we’ll ride to the Garlitzenklamm gorge, which is located directly next to the river Drau cycle path. The water gushes impressively through the gorge. Martin, our climbing guide, will hand out the equipment for our first climbing tour. After a short introduction, we’re off up the gorge – when you’re well secured it’s double the fun! Many families will marvel at our climbing skills – even though it is our first time – from the secured path structure with bridges and vantage points above us. As we've got our bicycles with us, we can go further towards Aguntum, the only Roman town in Tyrol – truly ancient.

Day 6: On the last day we’ll make use of our East Tyrol Card again and take a trip to the Hochstein – which is no problem with the new combination of cable car and chairlift to the Moosalm pasture. But we’ll go one step further and reach our first peak this week – the Böse Weibele – a short but strenuous ascent after the taster climbing tour on the day before. Back down to the valley we’ll go for a racy ride with the new summer toboggan run on the Hochstein – downhill as fast as the wind. We’ll end the day with a leisurely shopping tour in the old town of Lienz.

Day 7: It’s a pity, 7 days just flew by – even though there are so many things left to explore, climb and see.
